The UK government, on Wednesday, deported 76 Nigerians.
The conservative-led government of Prime Minister David Cameron had at inception vowed to reduce migration.
The administration also recently imposed a migration cap, focusing on non EU migrants in the UK, including Nigerians.
Mohammed Isa, the Head of Immigration in the Nigerian High Commission in the UK, confirmed the deportation.
He said that the Nigerians affected were deported for various immigration offences and criminal activities.
“The exercise commenced in 2005 following the conclusion of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on migration returns between the two countries,” he said. “It is also in line with global best practices.”
He said officials of the two countries would accompany the chartered plane conveying the deportees to Lagos to ensure that their human rights were protected.
Dr Dalhatu Tafida, Nigeria’s High Commissioner to the UK, said many Nigerians in the UK were surviving through illegal means, including credit card fraud, internet scams and immigration paper forgery.
“UK is no longer a safe haven; it is easier to live in Nigeria without a job than in the UK,” he said. “Unless you have a confirmed job, do not come; make sure your papers are complete and not forged.”
