BEN BRUCE GETS POLITICAL APPOINTMENT

The Chairman of Silverbird Group, Ben Murray-Bruce has been appointed as a honourary special adviser in the cabinet of newly sworn in Bayelsa State governor, Seriake Dickson.
In a statement made available to pressmen, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Mr Daniel Iworiso-Markson says Mr. Bruce, 54, is expected to perform in advisory capacity as a ‘Special Adviser on Investment and Tourism, drawing on his wealth of experience in show business garnered over the years.

RMD HOSTS GUS 8 CONTESTANTS

Richard Mofe Damijo, ace Nollywood actor and Delta State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism has applauded the efforts of Kevin Durst and Fejiro Ejogbamu, two Champions that emerged from the recently concluded Gulder Ultimate Search 8. He made the remarks when Messrs Durst and Ejogbamu, accompanied by other GUS 8 Champions, paid a courtesy visit to the Delta State government house.
Speaking at the receptions, RMD told the champions that their participations at the search were just a stepping stone towards more successes in life. He noted that the good thing about compete with other people and got selected is that it imposes more work the lucky champion. He said Delta State is synonymous with winning in competitions, hence the sterling performances by Durst and Ejogbamu.
The other GUS 8 Champions are: Christopher Okagbue, the winner, Anastasia Azike, the last female contestant standing, Anthony Igwe, Tony Horsfall, Promise Ojiegbe, Sunday Gyang, Olanrewaju Alawoki and Patience Ihongbe. The 10 Champions are currently on a tour which will take them to the states of origin of the contestants. They have earlier toured Oyo and Edo States.

IBORI TO FACE FRESH TRIAL IN NIGERIA SAYS EFCC

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commsion (EFCC) says embattled former governor of Delta State, James Ibori, who is standing trial for money laundering in London Court will still be tried for corruption whenever he returns to Nigeria.

This was contained in a statement issued on behalf of the commission by its acting head, Media and Publicity, Wilson Uwajaren .

Jennifer gave birth to the couple's first son in Santa Monica on Tuesday.
Ben and Jen, both 39, already have two daughters — six-year-old Violet and Serafina, three.
After Jennifer announced her pregnancy in August last year she insisted she would keep the sex and potential names of the child under wraps.
However, she did admit her daughters had some strange ideas lined up.
She said: "They suggested Donald Duck, Minnie Mouse Affleck, and then they moved on to Peter Pan, Captain Hook, Smee."

POLICE DEFUSE BOMB IN SULEJA MARKET

A public disaster was averted today in Suleja Niger State as the anti-bomb unit of the Nigerian police successfully defused a home made bomb left in the market.
Traders in the IBB Market said they detected a strange object packed in a cellophane bag containing Improvised Explosive Devices (IED). The bomb was detected at 8 AM as traders and buyers streamed into the market to start the day's business.-sahara

BUSAYO AKOGUN CRUSHED TO DEATH

 Busayo Akogun, a 27 year old graduate selling roasted yam by the roadside was crushed to death when the back of a trailer detached and hit an abandoned tanker on Tuesday in Ikere-Ekiti.

hospital immediately after the accident, she later died after about two hours. The lady was said to be assisting her mother at a roadside kiosk when the unfortunate accident occurred. 

 Her mother was also said to have been crushed against the wall of a filling station and sustained a serious injury. An eyewitness, Mr. Adekunle Olowolafe, said the legs of the mother were crushed. - O MA SE OOOOO

OPC MEMBER KILLS ETISALAT EMPLOYEE OVER N10 TOLL

A suspected member of the Odua Peoples Congress known by the pseudonym “Ultimate” on Monday allegedly killed an employee of Etisalat, Chukwuma Eze, in the Ejigbo area of Lagos State during an argument over N10 toll.
It was learnt that N10 toll was collected by the OPC members at a footbridge that links Ejigbo with Ajao Estate.

PRESIDENT, VP, GOVERNORS TO PAY TAX FROM APRIL 1


Following the signing into law the Personal Income Tax (Amendment) Act 2011 by President Goodluck Jonathan, the president, vice-president, governors as well as their deputies are to pay tax on all their official and non-official earnings effective April 1, 2012.
Before now, only their non-official income was subject to taxation.
Also, income from bonds issued by government and corporate entities are to be taxed.
The new regime took effect from June 14, 2011 when the amended Act was passed, but administrative formalities delayed the implementation.

IBORI PLEADS GUILTY TO MONEY LAUNDERING CHARGES

Former governor James Onanefe Ibori of Delta State today entered a guilty plea before a Southwark Crown Court in London where he was being tried on fraud and money laundering charges.Ibori pleaded guilty to 10 counts of fraud, money laundering and corrutption charges before judge Anthony Pitts.
Mr. Ibori's guilty plea  has closed a chapter to a long judicial and political saga pertaining to his massive money laundeering activities in his eight years as governor of one of Nigeria's major oil producing state.
Mr. Ibori faces up to 10 years in UK prison during sentencing, which will take place after the completion of the trial of his accomplice and financial advisor, Elias Preko, a Ghanaian national.oday the judge ordered that the remaining charges would remain on file.
In a short submission, Crown Prosecution Service lawyer, Sasha Wass, QC said the prosecution does not seek to go ahead with Mr. Ibori's trial anymore saying, " Mr. Ibori has accepted the entirety  of the prosecution's case as it has always been set out"-SAHARA

IFEANYI DIKE BACK IN HOSPITAL

The Chairman, Board of Trustees of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, Prince Ifeanyi Dike, has returned to the hospital in India where he had a kidney transplant last year.
Dike returned to the Indian hospital after his health was said to have been failing, and has since been receiving medical attention.

A PUBLIC alert on circulation of fake Goya Olive oil in the Nigerian market has been issued by National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC.

Seventy-eight-year-old Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, has gone back to school.
According to him, he desires to make history as the nation’s oldest monarch to bag a degree in Law while still on the throne.
Adetona on Saturday joined 201 other new Law students of the National Open University of Nigeria for their matriculation at Awa-Ijebu Study Centre.
Though he was admitted alongside 27 of his traditional rulers, the latter decided to defer their admission for a year.

Liyel Imoke of the Peoples Democratic Party has been declared as the winner of the Cross River State governorship election by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
The election, which held on Saturday February 25, 2012, was marked by voter apathy.
Imoke, who has by this victory clinched a second term in office, got 451,544 votex. He was followed by Usani Usani of the Action Congress of Nigeria, who got 31,026 while Patrick Okomiso of the All Nigeria Peoples Party, who clinched 2,235 votes.

3 KILLED AS SUICIDE BOMBER ATTACKS CHURCH IN JOS

A suicide bomber drove an explosives packed car into a church in the volatile central city of Jos on Sunday and killed three people, church leaders told AFP.
The attack is the latest in a country grappling with what have become almost daily assaults, most of them blamed on the Islamist sect Boko Haram.

OJUKWU TO BE BURIED IN AMERICAN GOLD CASKET

The late Igbo leader, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu would be buried in an American gold mixed with bronze casket. Ojukwu’s widow, Bianca, who is in London to begin preparations for bringing back the corpse of the departed Biafran warlord told Saturday Sun that the make-up of the casket was to depict the simple nature of Ojukwu when he was alive.
She disclosed that the customised casket has the family crest and the family coat of arms.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) earlier today charged the former governor of Bayelsa State, Timipre Sylva to court for alleged theft and misappropriation of N2.5billion belonging to the state.Sylva has been on the run since he was sacked from office by the Supreme Court.
A source said that the Nigerian government will alert INTERPOL to assist in his capture and deportation to face the 6-count charges filed against him inside the Federal High Court in Abuja.

US TO OPEN CONSULAR OFFICE IN KANO

In a move to “burnish” the anti-Western image in Northern Nigeria, the United States is planning to set up a consular office in Kano State, the Associated Press (AP) reported Thursday.

SUPREME COURT SACKS KEBBI STATE GOVERNOR

The lower tribunal had nullified Mr. Dakingari's election on the ground that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) did not provide the statutory Distribution Forms for the election.
By today's ruling the Supreme Court  ordered another election in 90-days. Mr. Dakingari would probably win the re-run because the ruling party typically wins such election rerun aided by INEC and police

ASA ABSENT IN COURT

The N700m suit filed by jazz and soul musician, Bukola Elemide, popularly known as Asa, against publishers of a Lagos-based magazine, News of the People, was on Thursday stalled due to the musician’s absence in court.
Asa and her manager, Janet Nwose, instituted the suit seeking the court to declare that an allegation contained  in the December 14-22, 2009 edition of the magazine that they were lesbians was defamatory .

ECONET REQUESTS $3.1 BILLION DAMAGES FROM AIRTEL

Econet wireless has filed a suit requesting for damages from Bharti Airtel to the tune of $3.1 billion. Econet has been challenging Bharti's Airtel ownership of Airtel Nigeria claiming that its 5 per cent stake, as a co-founder, was unfairly cancelled when Zain took control, so any decision made since then without it, including the transfer to Bharti, is void. This claim has been upheld by a court ruling on January 30 which declared  Bharti Airtel's ownership of its subsidiary Airtel Nigeria as "null and void".

TWO POLICEMEN KILLED IN ANOTHER KANO ATTACK

Suspected Boko Haram gunmen riding on motorcycles on Thursday attacked a police foot patrol on BUK Road in Kano, killing two policemen and injuring two others.
