The service at New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, New Jersey, has been called a "home going" ceremony by Whitney's family.
Inside the church, 1,500 mourners will include stars such as Oprah Winfrey, Bill Cosby, David Bowie and the Rev Jesse Jackson.
Outside, hundreds of loyal fans have gathered to pay their respects to their idol — who died aged 48 at a Beverly Hills hotel last Saturday.
