LAGOS RECRUITS DOCTORS TO REPLACE WORKERS ON STRIKE

Some striking Lagos doctors may have already lost their jobs, going by statements made by the State Medical Advisory Committee to the Governor.
The chairman of the committee, Ore Falomo, on Friday, said that the state government had started recruiting new doctors to replace those on strike.
Falomo described the ongoing doctors' strike as "an abuse of their professional calls" and said about a quarter of the striking doctors have already been replaced.
"We are not justifying whether there should be a strike or not but this is a noble profession that has to do with lives," he said.

Genevieve Nnaji announced today that she has secured a role in the film adaptation of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie‘s best selling Novel “Half of A Yellow Sun“. She revealed this through her publicists, VA-PR about this latest accomplishment.

Names one of Forbes “Most Powerful African Celebrities” joins the star-studded cast of Chiwetel Ejiofor, Anika Noni Rose and Thandie Newton in the highly anticipated movie. Genny will play the role of Ms Adebayo, another professor who develops a flirtatious relationship with her colleague Mr Odenigbo, played by Chiwetel Ejiofor.

The movie will be produced by Andrea Calderwood, the BAFTA winning producer of The Last King of Scotland and Gail Egan whose The Constant Gardener drew Oscar claim. Nigerian playwright Biyi Bandele, who has had a number of successful features on the London stage, including his adaptation of seminal post-colonial novel “Things Fall Apart” is making his directorial debut with this project.

The Nigerian Air Force, on Friday in Abuja, decorated its first female pilot, Flying Officer Blessing Liman, along with 29 other male pilots.
Decorating the officers in Abuja, the Minister of Defence, Dr. Bello Mohammed, said the Air Force has given a good account of itself and justified the vision of its founding fathers as a veritable tool for nation building.

BRITISH SURGEON REMOVES BOY'S MOLE

Little Didier Montalvo suffered from Congenital Melanocytic Nevus, which meant a mole grew so large it almost entirely covered his back.
The six-year-old, from Colombia, was teased and banned from going to school because of the growth.
Locals in his village feared he had been cursed by evil forces because he was conceived during an eclipse.
And mum Luz could not afford to pay for surgery to help rid her son of the birthmark blighting his life.
But when plastic surgeon Neil Bulstrode, from Great Ormond Street Hospital, in London, heard about the boy’s plight, he and his team flew to capital Bogotá to operate on him.
They eventually managed to remove the mole with a series of skin grafts.
Mr Bulstrode said: "Didier's was the worst case I had ever seen. Effectively three quarters of the circumference of his body was affected
"Obviously he has had to go through a number of painful operations, but we feel it was worth it. It’s great to see the photos of how Didier is getting on now. I'm really happy with how things have healed."

LAXMI WHO WAS WED AGED ONE GETS MARRIAGE ANNULED

Laxmi Sargara had her arranged child marriage quashed in what is thought to be the first case of its kind in India.
The 18-year-old wed ex-husband Rakesh, 20, when he was just three in the northern state of Rajasthan.
She only found out about the marriage THIS MONTH when her in-laws showed up to take her away.
She grew up with her family but was oblivious to the arrangement.
Child marriages are illegal in India but still common in rural areas.
Laxmi said: “I was unhappy about the marriage. I told my parents who did not agree with me, then I sought help.
“Now I am mentally relaxed and my family members are also with me.”
She went for help to the Sarathi Trust in Jodhpur which campaigns against enforced child marriages.
Bos Kriti Bharti said: “She did not like the boy and was not ready to go ahead with her parents' decision so she decided to refuse this marriage.
“It is the first example we know of a couple wed in childhood wanting the marriage to be annulled, and we hope that others take inspiration from it.”
Rakesh, who only has a first name, initially wanted to stay married but after counselling, relented. Both signed an affidavit declaring it null and void.

BOMB BLASTS HIT MEDIA HOUSES

A suicide bomber forcefully drove a jeep into the ThisDay Newspaper office building, Jabi, Abuja at about 11a.m. on Thursday and detonated a bomb.
The Chairman, Editorial board of ThisDay, Segun Adeniyi, said two security men and the suicide bomber died while 5 of their support staff were injured in the blast.
Adeniyi also confirmed similar attack on the Kaduna office but could not give details of casualties as he had not been briefed.
He also said they had received a warning on potential attack in January and reported it to security agencies, but assumed it referred to all media house.
The Kaduna blast occurred at the ThisDay and Sun newspapers offices on Kontagora Road, off Ahmadu Bello Way, Kaduna.

SERIAL CHILD RAPIST ARRESTED IN LAGOS

Forty five year old Abubakar Sulaiman, a suspected serial rapist, has been charged before the Ikeja Magistrate Court, Lagos for allegedly raping children.
Police officers attached to the Area M police command filed a two-count-charge against the petty trader at the family court 6 for having unlawful carnal knowledge of a 7-year-old and a 5-year-old girl (names withheld).
The charge sheet read that on March 28, at about 4.000pm in the Ifelodun area of Shasha in Lagos, Abubakar,  had unlawful carnal knowledge of the 7-year-old in his kiosk, and on the same date and in the same place, he also raped her sister.
According to the prosecution, the accused committed an offence punishable under section 218 of the Criminal Code cap17 volume II laws of Lagos State of Nigeria 2003.
Following the arraignment, the accused was conveyed to the Kirikiri prison, where he will be remanded until June 18 when the case will come up for hearing.
Sadly, these are not the only rape cases Abubakar will answer to, as he is also alleged to have raped a 3-year-old and a 5-year-old both of whom he lured to his shop with candy.
Abubakar resides on the same street with the girls’ parents at Shasha.
According to the girls’ mother, Abubakar is a serial rapist and medical reports show that he also raped the girls in his shop on their way back from school sometime in March.
“One day, in March, my neighbour noticed that her daughter came home with sweets and she decided to probe the girl, so that was how she confirmed that Abubakar slept with her children, aged 5 and 7,” she said.

NAHCO EMPLOYEE FOUND AND RETURNED N7.35 MILLION

Salami Ibrahim, a staff of the Nigerian Aviation Handling Company (NAHCO), who found and returned a wallet containing foreign currency totalling N7.3 million while cleaning an aeroplane has been rewarded for his honesty.
Ibrahim, a cabin cleaning team leader, found the wallet containing £25,000 and €5,000 inside an aircraft at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, (MMIA) Lagos, during a routine cleaning exercise.

LAGOS DOCTORS BEGIN INDEFINITE STRIKE

The crisis rocking the Lagos State Health sector took a new turn on Tuesday, as doctors in the employ of the state government embarked on an indefinite strike.
The doctors, under the aegis of Medical Guild, accused the state government of victimisation, and called for negotiations over the implementation of agreements reached by the parties in 2011.
Some of the doctors, who had already been served queries for joining a three-day warning strike observed earlier in the month, also declined to appear before the Personnel Management Board (PMB) on Tuesday.
The Medical Guild chairman, Olumuyiwa Odusote, said the union decided that no doctor should appear before the committee because "it was illegal".

YOUTHS PROTEST AGAINST SUBSIDY PROBE REPORT

Some youths, under the umbrella of the National Youth Movement for the Removal of Fuel Subsidy, on Tuesday, held a peaceful protest against the Farouk Lawan-led committee's report on the petroleum subsidy fund management.
The youths, who said the protest was against “falsehood” in the report submitted to the House of Representative by the committee, marched through the streets of Abuja to the National Assembly where security officers denied them access into the complex.
Jubril Umar, one of the youths who spoke to Daily Times, said: “We are not happy with the content of the report because there are a lot of lies and sentiments in it. The committee, instead of doing a proper job, used it to settle political and personal differences, as most of the people indicted were indicted wrongly.”
The protesters called on the House to reject the committee's report, asking for another investigation which will be "unbiased and balanced".

MALLAM SANUSI LAMIDO DRAGGED TO COURT

The Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Mallam Sanusi Lamido  has been dragged before a Federal High Court siting in Abuja over an alleged plagiarism by a Nigerian and United States of America-based academic, Prof Victor E. Dike.
Dike is a lecturer at the School of Engineering & Technology, National University of Sacramento, California, USA.
Dike, who is also the CEO and Founder, Center for Social Justice & Human Development, claims that he is the original author of the article titled: Review of the Challenges Facing The Nigerian (Is National Development Possible Without Technological Capability?).

13 MONTHS OLD CHUDUBEM NEEDS N3M FOR OPEN HEART SURGERY

Master Chudubem Godswill Tom, 13 months old, has a congenital heart defect. His parents, Mr. Abochi and Mrs. Ngozi Tom, from Ariam-Eluelu in Ikwuano Local Government Area of Abia State have appealed to Abia State Governor, Chief Theodore Orji, to help fund their son’s open heart surgery in India.

The distressed mother disclosed that all arrangements has been concluded for Tom’s open heart operation in India but, cried that securing the N3million (three million naira) needed has remained a great challenge.


Narrating what the baby has passed through since birth, the mother said Tom’s life has been that of pains. “Three days after birth, we discovered he had jaundice. So I took him to Airforce Hospital, Ikeja. Tests were conducted on him and we were told he had a heart condition. So, we were advised to take him to Lagos State University Teaching Hospital(LASUTH). The doctors there said the same thing.

MAN CUTS OFF LOVER'S HEAD AFTER SEX

The Oyo State Police Command, on Monday, paraded two suspects who allegedly killed a 42-year old woman, Sekinat Emiola.
According to the police, one of the suspects, Asimiyu Ayantayo, who was the lover of the deceased, allegedly beheaded her and cut off her two hands after making love with her.
However, Ayantayo claimed that Emiola died as a result of a charm that was placed on her by another lover; adding that he mutilated her corpse in order to make it impossible for r during esidents of the area to identify her body.
"She was my mistress," he said. "I contacted 'magun' (charm) on her love-making. She wanted to somersault but I helped her. Then she started vomiting after the act and fell down from the chair and died. It was then I beheaded her and cut off her two hands. I don’t need the body parts for anything and I did nothing with them."
The second suspect, Isiaka Akanbi, denied culpability in the alleged murder, saying his friend only sent him to buy a sack for him but did not know the purpose for which he needed it.
The Oyo State Police Commissioner, Tambari Mohammed, said residents of the area alerted the police about a headless body dumped in the area. He said the suspects would be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded.

FIRE WIPES OUT FAMILY

The incident happened on Saturday night at Ejigbo, Lagos State, Southwest Nigeria.
The affected family was identified as Peter Okpara, his wife, Ebere and their baby boy. They had returned from their village in the southeast a day before they met their death in Lagos.
The fire which started at about 11:00 p.m. at 9, Ogundade street at Ejigbo engulfed the entire building and destroyed items worth millions of naira belonging to other tenants.

MAN KILLS SON, MUTILATES WIFE OVER ALLEGED INFIDELITY

A washerman, Henry Nnamdi, has allegedly killed his one-year-old son, Chukwuebuka, in order to spite his wife, whom he accused of having an extra-marital affair.
It was learnt that Henry also used a hot pressing iron to burn his wife, Mercy, and stabbed her repeatedly in order to force her to confess to the allegation.
A police source said 40-year-old Henry had been suspecting that his wife was having an amorous relationship with his father for a while.
Our correspondent learnt that on Easter Sunday around 2am, Mercy turned down her husband’s request for sex resulting in an argument between the couple.

Influential American based tabloid, TIME Magazine has listed President Goodluck Jonathan as one of the 100 most influential people in the world in the 2012 edition of its annual list of influential personalities.
In its 2012 edition released on Wednesday, Jonathan featured on the influential list alongside other world leaders, industry pioneers, business moguls and celebrity figures.
Liberian President, Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, who wrote the citation for Jonathan, described him as a reflection of the political change that is sweeping through the African continent.

IBORI BAGS 13 YEARS SENTENCE

A Southwark Crown Court in London has sentenced James Ibori, former governor of Delta state to thirtheen years in prison on 10 counts of criminal charges bothering on fraud and money laundering.

At the resumption of the sentencing on Tuesday, there were several Nigerians inside the courtroom showing their support for the former Delta State governor, amongst whom was former footballer and member of the Nigerian Football Federation, John Fashanu.
