MAN PLUNGES TO DEATH FOM WAEC LIFT

A staffer of Odi-Olowo Local Govcernment Development Area (LCDA), Lagos has met his untimely death after he slipped from a lift at the West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) skyscraper in Yaba, Lagos, yesterday.

The man, Odebiyi Fatai, was said to have visited the council to collect his certificate and was descending one of the top floors to the ground floor.
He probably pressed the ‘G’ (ground) button but as the lift got to the 8th floor, its (lift) door opened suddenly.
The man was purported to have stepped out of the lift, unknown to him the lift had not moved to the ground floor. He fell from the 8th floor to the ground. He died instantly.

People expressed shock that WAEC could not put a caution sign to warn people that the lift had developed fault. One of the sympathisers who identified himself as Samuel Olu Apata, who was also a senior staff of LCDA said the man died of negligence on the part of WAEC.

The police spokesman, Joseph Jaiyeoba said the man was a staff member of Odi-Olowo Local Govcernment Development Area (LCDA). He said the man slipped from the 8th floor when the door of the lift opened.

He said the victim thought he had descended to the ground floor, unknown to him he was still on the 8th floor. He said the body had been deposited at the Military Hospital morgue, for autopsy.
When contacted, the Head of National Office of WAEC, Dr. Iyi Uwadiae was said to have travelled to Abuja for the 60 years anniversary of the body but a top management staff, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said Uwadiae had been briefed about the incident.

The source confirmed that the lift was actually faulty and the victim fell off the eight floor and died on the way to the hospital.
