CHINA INTERESTED IN NIGERIAN RAILWAY

A federal government delegation to China, led by Finance Minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, presented a report to the Federal Executive Council on Wednesday indicating a “deep interest” by Chinese companies to invest in various sectors of the Nigerian economy.

Labaran Maku, who addressed journalists after the meeting, said the discussions initiated by the delegation with the Chinese government sparked an interest to directly invest in building new trains which will be commercialised as a partnership between Chinese investors and Nigeria.
“We received a report that it was a huge success,” he said. “The idea of going to China to discuss as a team is a noble idea that the president has brought on board. Two of the reports specifically focussed on the development of the railway. The minister of transport reported to council that there was clear interest by the Chinese partners in the development of our railways. This time around the Chinese are indicating interest to directly invest in railways and to do it as a business.
Also, we received a second report about interest by the Chinese to partner with Nigeria in the area of agriculture and as you do know, agriculture is receiving a comprehensive reform in Nigeria today. The minister reported that the Chinese have shown a lot of interest in partnering with Nigeria particularly in the area of rice production”.
