ONLY 3 CANDIDATES SCORED ABOVE 300 IN 2012 UTME

The Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, Prof. ’Dibu Ojerinde, on Friday said only three out of the 1.5 million candidates who sat for the 2012 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations scored 300 marks and above.

Ojerinde said this while announcing the release of the results of the examination, which took place last Saturday.

He explained that other categories of scores showed that 336,330 candidates scored between 1-169 marks, 374,920 scored between 170-199 marks, while 601,151 scored between 200-249 marks.

Others were 71,339 candidates, who scored between 250 and 269. On the whole, 72,243 scored more than 250 marks.

TWO DIE IN LOKOJA AUTO CRASH

Two people were killed, while 23 others sustained injuries when a commercial bus crashed into a stationary truck on the Lokoja-Abuja Expressway on Thursday.

Segun Olapade, the Kogi State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), who confirmed the incident, said it occurred at about 1 a.m. on Thursday at a spot in Crusher area of the busy highway.

He said a total number of 69 persons were in the vehicles involved in the accident.

The bus belongs to the Young Shall Grow Transport Company.

He blamed the accident on over-speeding on the part of the luxury bus driver; adding that the corpses of the two male casualties had been deposited at the morgue of the Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja.

He said all those injured were also being attended to in the same hospital.-DAILYTIMES

COURT ORDERS FRED AMATA TO PAY N600,000 TO LANDLORD

Nollywood actor, Fred Amata, was on Wednesday ordered by a Surulere Magistrates’ Court in Lagos to pay one year rent arrears amounting to N600,000 to his landlord.

Amata was dragged to court in September 2010 by his landlord, Pa I. Fadoyebo, who asked the court to help him repossess his house from the actor.

He claimed that Amata was owing arrears of rent on the four-bedroom bungalow he was occupying at 8, Razaq Balogun St., Surulere, adding that the rent had accumulated from October 2009 to September 2010.

In his judgment, Magistrate Mukaila Fadeyi did not order Amata to vacate the property, but ordered him to pay the arrears within 14 days.

He blamed the lack of diligence prosecution on the part of Fadoyebo’s counsel, Mr. Y. A. Adeshina, for the court’s inability to assist the landlord in re-possessing the house.

Fadeyi faulted the tenancy agreement signed between both parties, saying it was not dated while the seven-day quit notice was not served on Amata.

Fadoyebo had on February 7 testified that Amata was a bad tenant who brought all manners of people into his compound.

Amata was not present throughout the court proceedings and neither he nor his counsel, Mr. Chris Okoh, was in court when the judgment was delivered.

LAGOS TO EXPECT 236 DAYS OF HEAVY RAINFALL

The Lagos State Government on Tuesday said residents of the state should prepare for at least 236 days of heavy rainfall in 2012, being the total period of rain predicted by experts.

The state government added that the intensity of the rainfall would be like that of 2011, recording 1,279mm of waters with marginal error of 50mm.

The Commissioner for the Environment, Tunji Bello, at a news briefing said the prediction was arrived at using the Seasonal Rainfall Predictions instrument, which was coordinated by the Nigeria Meteorological Agency.

Gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram on revenge mission, yesterday in Maiduguri, Borno State, shot dead Alhaji Abdullahi Bello, father of the detained sect’s spokesman, Abu Darda (aka Abu Qaqa).

Bello is a retired Deputy Comptroller of Prisons. Also killed was Bello’s friend, whose identity could not be ascertained by Press time.

Four students of the University of Lagos were on Tuesday charged before an Ebute Meta Magistrates' Court in Lagos for allegedly gang raping a 17-year-old girl.

The accused: Jeremiah Bamigbayan, 18; Lanre Olayemi, 19; Abisoye Atoyegbe, 18; and Nelson Onyeoziri, 18, are facing a three-count charge of rape, conspiracy and assault.

They pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The police prosecutor, Innocent Effiong, said the accused, all of the Business Administration Department, allegedly committed the offence when they conspired and raped the victim on March 17.

He said the alleged victim, a student of History and Strategic Studies of the same university, was overpowered and raped at about 10.30 p.m. at Ozolua Boys Quarters on the campus.

Effiong said the offences contravened Section 258, 259 and 409 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State 2011.

Magistrate Adesola Ikpatt granted the accused bail in the sum of N100, 000 each, with two sureties each in like sum, and adjourned the case to April 30 for mention.

The Lagos State Government last week demolished five mosques located within the State secretariat in Alausa, Ikeja, following an order by Governor Fashola, banning all religious activities within the secretariat.

The demolition of the mosques was carried out by the government after getting intelligence reports from SSS that the secretariat was vulnerable to attack by Boko Haram as long as the mosques remain within the secretariat.

There have been rising security tension in the state following discoveries of explosive devices in various parts of the state in recent times.

That's the word out of Britain, where multiple reports say David and Victoria Beckham are planning to sell their 24- acre English estate dubbed Beckingham Palace.

The asking price is around $28 million, according to the Daily Mail.

When the couple and their children moved to Los Angeles in 2007, they held on to the property, located north of London in Hertfordshire, as a base for when they went back home.

Despite voter intimidation, reported ballot box stuffing and the alleged bribes to coax voters, Senegal’s president Abdoulaye Wade has lost the second round of a fiercely contested presidential election. Preliminary results showed that Wade had not gained the majority of votes at several polling stations.

The 85-year old two-time President congratulated his political rival and former prime minister, Macky Sall, even before the closing of the polls on Sunday and Sall’s supporters celebrated in the streets of the capital, Dakar.

Senegal’s democratic reputation has been thoroughly tested through this year’s presidential election. Violence poured on the streets as a largely youthful anti-Wade collective vowed to take action if Wade were to take a third term. The legality of Wade’s bid for a third term was under question, with the national constitution held under close scrutiny.

Wade’s support base has dimmed during his presidency, especially with the increasing political presence of his son Karim, the perceived heir apparent. LATE DIG HARUNA'S MOTHER DIES OF SHOCK

Mother of the late Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIGP), Haruna John, Mrs. Silany John died on Saturday of shock following the death of her son.

Haruna died along other police officers on Wednesday March 14, in a helicopter crash in Jos, 12 days after he was decorated with his new rank, by the acting Inspector-General (IG), Mohammed Abubakar.

His burial was slated Saturday, March 31 but his mother died Saturday morning, March 24. She was 82years old.

The Federal Government yesterday gave all foreign airlines operating in the country a 30-day ultimatum within which to dismantle the fare regime that sees Nigerian passengers paying higher fares than other passengers in West Africa.

Aviation Minister, Princess Stella Oduah, who issued the ultimatum in Abuja last night, said the 30-day ultimatum would start today.

This came on a day the Ministry of Aviation also sought the cooperation of the National Assembly towards the enactment of a Passengers’ Bill of Rights.

29-year-old Titus Ime raped his in-law, a 19-year-old woman identified as Blessing John, to death.

The incident occurred in a forest at Epe. The suspect allegedly trailed Blessing to her father’s farm, where he raped her to death.

Ime, reporting the incident, said he assaulted Blessing due to her refusal to date him. The rapist cum murderer blamed his dastardly act on his “great love" for the deceased.

SEAN KINGSTON FACES LEGAL BATTLE FOR ALLEGED ATTACK ON WOMAN

Jamaican born reggae singer Sean Kingston is facing a fresh lawsuit, for allegedly leading a gang attack against a woman.

The ‘attack’ was said to have taken place back in 2010 after a concert when Sean Kingston was touring as the opening act for young pop star Justin Bieber. Now roughly two years later the 22-year-old Kingston will be making his way to court.

King was served at the Los Angeles airport just as he was getting off of a flight from Miami, Florida on March 16. According to source, when he was asked about the lawsuit, he responded ‘no comment’, stating that he ‘was at the airport on official business’.

A statement has yet to be released by Kingston or his representatives. Kingston just recently dodged another lawsuit from Cassandra Sanchez, the woman who was part of the near-fatal 2011 jet ski accident where Kingston was alleged to be recklessly driving.

2 CONFIRMED DEAD AS 7 UNDERGRADUATES FELL INTO A WELL THIS MORNING

Tragedy struck early this morning at the Ambrose Ali University, Ekpoma, after seven female students fell into a well located inside one of the hostels inside the school compound while fetching water and doing other things around the well.

According to eye witnesses, three girls were washing on top of the well, which is the hostel's only source of water, while the remaining four were sitting on its top, when all of a sudden the well collapsed beneath them. All seven girls fell into the well.

Other students around the hostel when the incident occurred rescued 6 of the alive. Unfortunately one died inside the well. Another one died on the way to the hospital. The remaining five are receiving treatment at the hospital.

KIM KARDASHIAN HIT BY A FLOUR BOMB

The reality show star was chatting on the red carpet when a packet of the white powder was dumped on her head.

It spoilt the carefully selected outfit of leather trousers, blue shirt and black blazer.

Whitney Houston died from an accidental drowning in a hotel bathtub, but the “effects of atherosclerotic heart disease and cocaine use” were contributing factors in her death, the Los Angeles County Coroner said in an initial autopsy report released Thursday.

Houston, 48, was “found submerged in bathtub filled with water” and “no trauma or foul play is suspected,” the coroner said.

The toxicology tests found other drugs in her body, including marijuana, the anti-anxiety drug Xanax, the muscle relaxant Flexeril and the allergy medicine Benadryl, the report said. But these drugs “did not contribute to the death,” it said.
