WAEC RECORDS MASS FAILURE IN SSCE

The May/June 2012 West Africa Examination Council results recorded another mass failure, with only 38.81percent of the candidates considered to have passed.
In a press briefing held in Lagos to announce the results on Friday, WAEC's Head of Nigeria National office, Iyi Uwadiae, said that 649,156 candidates representing 38.81percent obtained credits in five subjects and above, including in English Language and Mathematics.

He, however, noted that the results showed an eight percent improvement when compared to last year's May/June results, where 30.91percent of the candidates made the pass benchmark.
Uwadiae also said that a total of 1,695,878 candidates registered for the examination, out of which 1,672,224 candidates, consisting of 923,974 male and 748,250 female candidates, sat for the examination.
He added that the results of 150,874 candidates, representing 8.90 percent, were yet to be released as "a few of their subjects were still being processed".
The examination body also stated that 112,000 candidates' results, representing 6.70 percent, were being withheld in connection with various cases of examination malpractices. According to Uwadiae, the full results would be available on the examination body's website by weekend.
