MAKOKO RESIDENTS STORM LAGOS GOVERNMENT HOUSE

Hundreds of Makoko residents have stormed the Lagos State Government House to protest the ongoing demolition of shanties and structures in their community.
Chanting anti-government songs and displaying placards, the protesters, on Monday, marched along Obafemi Awolowo Way to confront the State Governor, Babatunde Fashola.
The Executive Director of the Social and Economic Rights Centre (SERAC), Felix Morka, leading the protest, said over 30,000 persons had already been displaced.
Morka condemned the ongoing demolition exercise in the coastal community, describing it as a trespass on federal government land.
"Giving the people 72 hours to vacate where they have been living for years is wrong. In cases like this, due process should be followed," he said.
The protesters also condemned the killing of a chief in the community, Timothy Agbe, who was shot by the police, while trying to stop the demolition.
