The Lagos State government has shut down the headquarters of
the Lord’s Chosen Charismatic Revival Church over environmental degradation.
The state government accused the church of failing to
observe proper waste management system, saying the church burns its refuse
inside the church, an action which ran foul of the state environmental laws.
The government also alleged that the church did not have
toilets and waste disposal facilities as they empty their wastes into the
drainage channel as well as built attachments on the drainage channel.
It was gathered that officials of the Ministry of the
Environment, accompanied by a police team, stormed the church’s premises on
Sunday morning, leaving thousands of worshippers stranded as they could not
access the church for the Sunday service.
Speaking on the development, state Commissioner for the
Environment, Mr. Tunji Bello, said no institution is bigger than the law,
adding that the church had committed lots of environmental abuse which it must
correct before the massive edifice could be reopened.
The government accused the church of defacing and degrading
the environment and has refused to do anything about it even after it had been
served abatement notice to upgrade the area.
