29YEAR OLD LADY SLAUGHTERED BY FIANCE
The Criminal Investigation Department, CID of Nassarawa State Police Command, Lafia is questioning Johnson Yakubu, a taxi driver who plies his trade in Abuja on the murder of his fiancee.
The body of the deceased, 29-year-old Victoria Akubo, was discovered by the son to the couple’s landlord on Friday afternoon.
Explaining the circumstances in which the body was discovered, sources in the deceased residence at Catholic Church Road, One Man Village, a suburb of Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, told P.M.NEWS that the taxi driver who had left home earlier in the day called the landlord’s son to help check on his fiancee since he has been trying unsuccessfully to get her on phone.
The landlord’s son who also spoke to P.M.NEWS said he subsequently went to knock the door of the couple’s flat, but he did not get any response.
The landlord’s son said he subsequently called Johnson back to inform him that there was nobody at their home.
But the taxi driver was said to have insisted that his wife is inside the house.
He asked the landlord’s son to check inside the house through the other door that leads into the couple’s flat at the back.
Following Johnson’s instructions, the landlord’s son told P.M.NEWS that he went to peep in through the window and saw the body of Victoria lying on the bed with her face covered with a pillow.
He said he entered the flat and discovered that the Victoria was dead with two marks indicating that she was stabbed in two places. The landlord’s son said he consequently reported to the police. P.M.NEWS confirmed that the incident was reported at the local police station before the case was transferred to Lafia on Monday this week. It was gathered that Johnson, in his statement, tried to deny responsibility for the murder.
But the claim is being faulted by Victoria’s family.
It was learnt that Johnson had initially told the police that he left home around 8 am that day, but changed his statement later when he gathered that Mama Reuben had called Victoria around 6:12 am, indicating that the deceased was still alive as at then.

The same Mama Reuben told the police that she later went to see Victoria at their home around 7:30 am, but left after she repeatedly knocked the door without getting any response.
P.M.NEWS investigations also revealed that though Victoria and Johnson did their traditional marriage introduction ceremony preparatory to their wedding about two months ago, the deceased’s family did not approve of the marriage.
Also, neighbours of the couple at their former residence told P.M.NEWS that Johnson, an Igala from Kogi State, like his wife, is in the habit of beating and maltreating his wife to be.
Victoria, it was learnt, was admitted in hospital for some weeks recently as a result of such beating.
A younger sister of the deceased who was living with the couple claimed to have left in protest of the domestic abuse of Victoria.
Solomon Akubo, an elder brother of the deceased, said the family wants justice to be done on the issue even as he alleged that the police are trying to sweep the matter under the carpet.-pm news

BILL GATE IN NIGERIA TO DISCUSS POLIO
Bill Gates, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, is currently in Nigeria to discuss polio eradication and strengthening of immunization against other vaccine-preventable diseases amid a resurgence of polio cases in the West African nation.
The foundation’s CEO, Jeff Raikes, is with Gates to talk to Nigeria’s government officials and traditional leaders to follow up on the Abuja Commitments to Polio Eradication, in which Nigerian federal and local government officials committed in 2009 to have at least 90 percent of children immunized against polio toward its eradication.
Immediately following the Abuja commitment, polio cases in Nigeria fell by 95 percent. Fewer children were paralyzed by polio as well. But attention to polio waned in 2011, with 30 cases of the paralyzing disease reported so far in six states.
Nigeria is one of only four countries where polio transmission has never been stopped, the other three being India, Pakistan and Afghanistan.
The Gates Foundation has been implementing various initiatives to wipe out polio worldwide. These include vaccination campaigns, development of better vaccines and antiviral drugs.
Beyond the issue of polio, Gates will also discuss ways to help Nigeria tackle broader health issues and improve agriculture in the country.
He will also be meeting with U.N. officials to express his condolences on last month’s bombing of the U.N. building in Abuja.

BRIDE WITH THE LONGEST VEIL
Bride Elena De Angelis wanted to turn heads on her wedding day, but she may have taken that desire a little too literally: She just set a new Guinness record for the longest veil ever worn by a bride — her white silk headpiece stretched for 1.86 miles!
Six hundred people had to help carry the veil during the processional. Thousands of residents from the Casal di Princice town in Naples cheered the bride as she made her way to the church in an antique car to marry Ferdinand Pucci last Thursday.
De Angelis' record-breaking accessory was crafted from 3.7 miles of material and designed by Gianni Molaro Campania.
Molaro said: "I was really greateful to be asked to design this veil...I wanted this veil to symbolize peace and hope and I think we have achieved this."
De Angelis' never-ending topper joins a list of some other equally mind-blowing bridal attire, including: the longest wedding dress train (which measured almost 8,165 ft.) created by Lichel van den Ende in the Netherlands and the blingiest gown in the world (which featured 45,024 crystals), designed by Özden Gelinlik Moda Tasarim Ltd. from Turkey.
DEFENCE SAYS MICHAEL JACKSON CAUSED HIS OWN DEATH
Michael Jackson died due to repeated incompetence and negligence by his personal doctor, a prosecutor said Tuesday as the manslaughter trial opened for Dr. Conrad Murray.
But Murray's defense countered that Jackson caused his own death by taking a lethal dose of the powerful anesthetic propofol when Murray wasn't looking.
Both sides laid out their cases on the first day of opening statements in a Los Angeles courtroom. Jackson's family members, many dressed in black, watched, listened and wept.
Deputy District Attorney David Walgren played a recording of Jackson speaking in a slow, slurred voice to show the effects of the propofol that Murray administered to help Jackson sleep.
On the recording on Murray's iPhone, time-stamped 9:05 a.m. on May 10, 2009, Jackson discusses his feelings about his upcoming This Is It concert series in London.
"When people leave my show, I want them to say, 'I've never seen nothing like this in my life,' " Jackson says. "Go. Go. I've never seen nothing like this. Go. It's amazing. He's the greatest entertainer in the world."-PEOPLE
