The headquarters of a popular weekly magazine, TheNews, and an evening tabloid, PMNews was on Wednesday evening gutted by fire.
The fire, which started at 6.30pm, however, affected the last floor of the two-storey building on Acme Road, Lagos.
It was learnt that the inferno was caused by a power surge.
An employee of the Independent Communications Network Limited, the publishers of TheNews, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said nobody was injured in the incident.
He, however, said the fire destroyed every equipment and property in the affected floor.
He said, “The fire was very ferocious. I
think the fire was caused by power surge. When the power supply was
restored, the voltage was high and some employees did not switch off
their systems.”
3 CRUSHED TO DEATH AS CONTAINER FALLS ON A CAR IN LAGOS
No fewer than three persons were crushed to death yesterday when a
40-feet containerized vehicle fell on a Mazda car on the Badagry-Seme
Expressway.
The accident which occurred at about 1.15p.m, was attributed to the
bad road which has been a nightmare to commuters and other users of the
road.
The containerized vehicle with registration number XT 339 AKD was
said to be conveying some goods when it lost control and fell on the
car, with four occupants. Three of the passengers died instantly, while
the driver was in a critical condition.
The accident caused a heavy traffic while passers-by went on an
immediate rescue mission of the trapped persons, before officials of
Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, and Lagos State Traffic Management
Authourity, LASTMA, came to the scene of the accident.
TWO SISTERS KILLED IN COLLAPSED BUILDING
Their mother identified simply as Iya Coker was injured.
Three out of the six flats on one of the two wings of the building completely collapsed at about 12:05am.
It was learnt that the deceased and their mother lived on the first floor.
Toyin,
was a 30-year-old medical doctor, while Bukky recently finished her
national youth service. Both sisters were graduates of the University of
Lagos.
One of the survivors, Ahmadu Omoniyi,
who lived on the ground floor of the building said he informed Mrs.
Coker of the impending danger at about 11.40pm on Tuesday night when he
heard the building cracking.
He said, “When I got home on Tuesday
evening, I observed that sand and stone were falling off from the walls
and the decking. I informed the caretaker immediately. I moved into the
apartment in September.
“Around 11pm, I suddenly woke up feeling
uneasy. I roused the other two people staying with me and asked them
to start packing vital things while I went to Mrs. Coker’s place to draw
her attention to the situation.

UNIABUJA SHUTDOWN
The protest was carried out by students of the Faculty of Engineering in reaction to the inability of the school authority to release a timetable for their exams even when students in other faculties have started theirs.
A University source who spoke on condition of anonymity, however, revealed there was a problem with Engineering courses with regards to accreditation, as those who graduated from the faculty were yet to get their results.
“The authorities felt there is no point writing exams for courses that have no accreditation until the issue is resolved, but the students feel short changed by the management and that is why they started protesting today,” the source said.

The revocation came following the alleged repeated breach of the terms of the 25-year concession agreement, as pointed out by President Goodluck Jonathan in his media chat on Sunday.
While announcing the revocation to journalists at the State House, the Minister of Works, Mike Onolememen, said government has subsequently engaged Julius Berger and RCC firms to now reconstruct the roads to avert further carnage of the expressway.
The construction of the road by Bi-Courtney, which was awarded in May 2009, was supposed to be completed in the next six months but the minister lamented that the firm had failed to achieve any remarkable milestone expected of it.

My breasts are heavy with milk; it is a burden I have refused to bear. They should please bring back my baby to suck my breasts. I refuse to believe that my baby has gone; the God who put it in my womb for nine months before its delivery will fish out the perpetrators and my baby will be brought back to me.

FEMI BADEJO STILL IN PAIN FROM BULLET WOUNDS
An employee of Access Bank, Femi Badejo,
who was allegedly shot alongside a security guard, Joshua Musa, by
policemen on Saturday at Ikota, Lagos, still has a bullet lodged in his
wrist.
“I’m still in pain from the bullet
wounds. I was shot five times. Four of the bullets have been removed but
the fifth one is still lodged in my wrist and because of fear of
complications, doctors can’t touch it for now,” he said.
However, Badejo has been moved from St. Nicholas Hospital, Lagos Island, to an undisclosed location.
Meanwhile, Covenant University Alumni
Association has written a petition to the Inspector-General of Police,
Muhammed Abubakar, over the alleged shooting.
