FIRE AT OBASANJO'S HILLTOP MANSION
Barely 24 hours after
former President Olusegun Obasanjo celebrated the annual Ibogun Olaogun
Day in his birthplace, Ibogun Olaogun, Ogun State, a section of his
Hilltop mansion in Abeokuta was on Thursday gutted by fire.
Computers and office appliances were among items said to have been destroyed in the inferno.
Although no-one could
ascertain the cause of the fire, sources at the mansion, who pleaded
anonymity, said it could have been caused by an electrical fault.
The fire was said to
have started barely 20 minutes after Obasanjo left the house for an
undisclosed place. He was however said to have hurriedly returned to his
burning building to supervise those fighting to quench the fire.

Levante striker, Obafemi Martins spent Christmas day in Lagos visiting hospitals and orphanage homes. The Super Eagles forward who missed out on a chance to appear in his second African Cup of Nations in South Africa, visited the Maternity Island Hospital, the SOS Village in Isolo and some hospitals in Lagos.
Martins embarked on this noble gesture on behalf of his foundation which gave gifts items and cash donations to the visited hospitals and orphanages.
Sources close to the striker disclosed that over N10million was splashed on hospital bills of babies born on Christmas day in Lagos which also included cash donations to their mothers.

Joseph Benjamin had a merry moment on TV3 Ghana Yesterday (December, 25) as he read the business and sports news as the celebrity newscaster. The Nigerian actor shared the moment with Ghanaian acts, Yvonne Okoro, John Dumelo, and Juliet Ibrahim. Joseph is spending time in Ghana for the movie “Contract” featuring himself, Yvonne Okoro, and Hlomla Dandala of Jacob’s Cross which will premiere on the 28th of December at the National Theatre, Ghana.
EXPLOSION ROCKS JANKARA MARKET
It was gathered that trouble started when a locked-up shop under one of the three buildings stocked with fireworks popularly called 'bangers' suddenly exploded and went up in flames.
The building is said to be located on Oko Awo Street in the popular Jankara area of Lagos, close to King Ado Secondary School.
Firefighters and rescue agencies were swiftly deployed on the scene and battled the huge blaze.
Within minutes of the explosion, the fire spread to a nearby building, sending hundreds of residents, traders and shoppers fleeing in the usually boisterous market area.
As a result of the explosion, it was learnt that the building which had the shop under it and two others adjoining collapsed.
Residents of the three buildings, who were still celebrating the Christmas festivity mood but were still on beds to witness the boxing day, were affected during the explosions.
A score of other residents were said to be currently trapped in the debris of the collapsed three buildings.
As at press-time, officials of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), fire service, police, Nigerian Security Civil and Defence Corps (NSCDC) and others had visited the scene for rescue operations.
The exact casualty figure is yet unknown, although many injured persons have been rushed to the hospital with serious burns.

LASTMA MEN BEAT COMMERCIAL BUS DRIVER TO DEATH
A commercial bus driver, Isaac Popoola,
on Monday died after being allegedly assaulted by two officials of the
Lagos State Traffic Management Authority in the Oshodi area of the
state.
The bus conductor, Aremu Salawu, who
witnessed the incident, said the LASTMA officials, Adesanya Olatunde and
Oludele Ogunrinde, assaulted Popoola at about 6.30am around Brown Bus
Stop resulting in his death.
He said the deceased’s bus with number
plate, XL166SNK, conveying 17 passengers from Igando/Isheri was
approaching Brown Junction when a LASTMA pick-up van crossed the bus.
The leader of the LASTMA officials,
according to Salawu, ordered two of his men to impound the vehicle and
take it to the agency’s office.

ACID BATH VICTIM,CHIKA EGBO DIES
Chika Egbo, the 25-year-old student of Enugu State College of
Education, who was bathed with acid by her estranged fiancé, David
Suleiman, in November, has been reported dead.
Chika gave up the ghost early Thursday
morning, on her hospital bed, at the Burns Unit of the Lagos State
University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja.
Her father, Matthew Egbo, who confirmed the incident told Vanguard
that his daughter fell into comma around 11: pm Wednesday night and was
placed on a life-support machine before she gave up the ghost around
1:00 am, Thursday morning.
Suleiman was alleged to have attacked Chika and an Okada rider,
identified as Sunny Daniel with a can of acid at Bakare Street, Ikotun,
Lagos, on November 5, 2012, following Chika’s refusal to allow him
access to their only child.
Suleiman, who was subsequently arrested by the police in Ikotun
Police Station and was transferred to the Homicide Section of the State
Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, in Yaba, was later charged to
an Ebute-Meta Magistrate court where he was arraigned on a two counts
charge of attempted murder and “causing grievous bodily harm.
Magistrate O. Olatunji who presided over the case granted him bail of
N500, 000 with two sureties in like sum. The Magistrate in his ruling
stated that the sureties must be blood relations and must present
evidence of tax clearance.
