HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES ENDORSE 14 YEAR JAIL TERM FOR SAME SEX MARRIAGE
The House of Representatives on Thursday endorsed the report on a bill prohibiting same-marriage in the country.
Offenders risk a 14-year jail term, according to the bill unanimously endorsed by the lawmakers.
The ‘Bill for an Act to Prohibit
Marriage or Civil Union entered into Between Persons of Same Sex,
Solemnisation of Same and for Other Matters Related Therewith’ earlier
passed first and second readings at the House.
It went to the committee stage for public hearings before the report returned to the House for consideration.
Section 5(1) of the bill states that
“persons that entered into a same-gender marriage (man-man or
woman-woman) or civil union contract commit an offence and are jointly
liable on conviction to a term of 14 years imprisonment each.”
SUSPECT CONCEALS CANNABIS IN DRIED BITTER LEAF
A 38-year-old suspected drug trafficker,
Ifeanyi Okafor, was on Thursday arrested at Muritala Mohammed
International Airport for concealing 2kg of cannabis in a bag of dried
bitter leaf, meant for export.
Okafor was apprehended alongside another
suspect, Obianwo Okwuchukwu, who was caught with 1.700kg of
methamphetamine hidden in his luggage. While Okwuchukwu was caught
during the outward clearance of Arik Air passengers to Monrovia, the
cannabis was discovered during the search of goods meant for export via a
Qatar flight.
PM NEWS DISPATCH RIDER DIES IN CRASH
A dispatch rider with PM News was killed on Tuesday by a Toyota Sequoia at Oregun Bus Stop, Lagos State around 10am.
The rider, who was identified as Peter
Isim, died on the spot after he was cut into two by the Sport Utility
Vehicle with number plate Lagos AGL 882 AG.
The accident was said to have occurred as the driver of the SUV was hurrying to beat the traffic light.
According to eyewitnesses, the driver of
the SUV manoeuvred to connect with another lane when he hit Isim who
was on his power bike, heading for another direction.
EX MINISTER'S RELATION ACCUSED OF KILLING LIVE-IN LOVER
The suspect, George Iheanacho, allegedly
killed his 32-year-old partner, Regina James, the mother of his three
children – two boys and a girl.
George was said to have killed Regina in
their residence at 3, Calvary Street, Iyana Isasi, Lagos-Badagry
Expressway in late April, 2013.
It was learnt that the
accused, who worked in the ex-minister’s company, Genesis Worldwide
Shipping Company, Apapa, on the fateful day, accused Regina, who had
lived with him for six years, of unfaithfulness.
It was further learnt that subsequent
argument over the accusation led to the suspect beating up Regina and in
the process, she fell into a coma.

ESTHER ODOZI BARES BREASTS ON COURT PREMISES
In a desperate attempt to draw attention
to her misfortune, Esther Odozi, 21, bared her breasts on Monday on the
premises of Ikeja Magistrate’s Court as she protested against hunger
that was “killing her and the five children” she left back home in Agbor
Owanta, Delta State.
Odozi laid half-naked on a road in the
court shouting, “Hunger, hunger. Government must do something today. I
have not received anything from the plenty crude oil money government is
spending in our state. Nigerians are wicked.”

FALLING TREE KILLS 31,INJURES 16 IN IMO
Thirty-one persons, including two
sisters, were killed when a tree at the Ukwu Uko evening market at
Umuejinwaoke Umudagu village, Mbieri, Mbaitolu Local Government Area of
Imo State, fell on them.
It was reported that 16 other victims sustained varying degrees of injury during
the incident, which was caused by a rainstorm on Thursday night.
A resident of the community, Mr. Nnaemeka Emenyonu, told NAN in Owerri that the tree fell on the affected persons about 8:00 pm.
He said the tree also destroyed the village hall.
“The big tree fell suddenly, killing 31 people on the spot and injuring 16 others. Those injured were taken to the hospital.
“The victims include two sisters, who
were selling tomatoes. Honestly, this is the saddest event in the
history of our community,” he said.
The traditional ruler of the community,
Eze Godwin Duru, lamented that such a tragic incident had never occurred
in the community.
“I do not know what to say. God, what
can we call this? My people were destroyed within a twinkle of an eye,
what a pity,” he said.
The Police Public Relations Officer in
the state, Mrs. Joy Elemoko, declined comment on the incident after
several efforts to get the command’s reaction to the issue.
MIDWIFE COLLECTED N4.2M FROM TWO WOMEN FOR MIRACLE BABIES
Desope Cecilia, 61, and Joy Ibe, 43,
were among victims of a midwife, Oby George, who promised them ‘miracle’
twins and triplets respectively.
While the midwife was being paraded
before journalists at the Lagos State Police Command, Ikeja, on Friday,
the victims told their stories, with faces covered for security reasons.
Cecilia said she had not been able to give her 78-year-old husband a child since they got married.
She stated, “A lady who knew I had tried
to conceive without success for a long time, told me about the midwife
(George). The lady gave me the phone number of the woman and I learnt
her clinic is in Port Harcourt.
“When I got there in March 2012, she
explained to me that she would be able to treat me with herbs and I
would get pregnant. I was told to pay N1.5m, which I paid to her.
“She gave me some herbs to take back to
Lagos with me and take for nine months. I took the herbs religiously. My
tummy began to swell, and my feet too. Those were the only signs I had
that made me think I was pregnant.”
