THIRD MAINLAND BRIDGE REPAIRS TO BEGIN ON SUNDAY
The planned partial closure of the Third Mainland Bridge for repair work has been slated for Sunday, July 8, 2012.
The Minister of State for Works, Bashir Yuguda, disclosed this on Friday at the official flag-off of the repairs in Lagos.
Yuguda said that repairs would take off on Saturday, but that "traffic diversion would start on Sunday."
The new date is coming after an initial delay, as the project was expected to have started on July 1 before it was suspended.

WOMAN BITES OFF NEIGHBOUR'S NOSE OVER SUSPICION OF SNATCHING HER HUSBAND
A housewife, Mrs. Ruka Amoha who claimed her husband has denied her sexual intercourse for some months decided to vent her anger on her neighbour, Mrs. Yemi Adelani.
Ruka, who alleged that her husband, Wasiu Amoha, starved her of sex because he was enjoying an amorous affair with her neighbour, descended on Yemi and bit off her nose, during an argument at their apartment.
“I cannot accept a situation where Yemi is enjoying her husband and mine at the same time thus denying me the opportunity to enjoy my husband,” said Ruka, a mother of three.
The incident happened at 13, Adealu Street, Dopemu, Lagos, southwest Nigeria.
Doctors at the Lagos General Hospital, Orile Agege confirmed that Yemi’s nose was badly damaged and she needs plastic surgery to survive.
COMMERCIAL SEX WORKER IGNITES CLASH IN OGUN
A contest over who was the rightful customer of an unidentified sex worker led to a clash between two communities in Ibese, Yelwa Local Government Area of Ogun,
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in Ogun, ASP Muyiwa Adejobi, who confirmed the incident on Thursday, said the crisis started when two men disagreed over who the true customer of the woman was.
Sources said at least 30 articulated vehicles were still burning as at the time of visit, adding that several persons who sustained injuries during the clash had been taken to undisclosed hospitals.
NIGERIA AIR FORCE AIRCRAFT CRASH-LANDS IN BENIN
Travellers at the Benin Airport panicked on Thursday when an air force plane crash-landed on the runway.
Sources confirmed that none of the two pilots onboard the aircraft, with registration number 5N-BKS, were injured in the incident.
“The plane landed on the runway with its tyres locked in, an indication that the tyres did not shoot out,” said a source at the airport. “But only the pilot can really explain what happened.”
An airport rescue team led Air Maritime Operations responded promptly with the emergency team.
The incident caused delays in flight operations for some hours.
The airport manager, Segun Ayodele, who confirmed the incident, however said he was not at the airport when it occurred.
NUC SUSPENDS LICENCES OF SEVEN PRIVATE UNIVERSITIES
The National Universities Commission has on Wednesday suspended the operational licenses of seven private universities for allegedly not meeting up to its set targets on school facilities and academic programmes as established by the NUC.
The suspended universities are Lead City, Caritas, Joseph Ayo Babalola, Tansian, Madonna, Achievers and Obong.COURT RESTATES BAN ON UNILAG NAME CHANGE
A Federal High Court, Ikeja on Wednesday reaffirmed its earlier interim order restraining the Federal Government and other concerned authorities from changing the name of University of Lagos to Moshood Abiola University.
Justice Stephen Adah reiterated that the order would subsist throughout the period of hearing and final determination of the suit challenging the propriety of renaming the university through a broadcast by President Goodluck Jonathan on May 29, 2012.
NIGERIA SET TO GET FIRST FEMALE CHIEF JUSTICE
President Goodluck Jonathan has nominated Justice Alooma Muktar to assume the premier position as Chief Justice of Nigeria’s Supreme Court.President Jonathan forwarded Justice Muktar’s name to the Senate for confirmation as the successor to Justice Dahiru Musdapher, who is due to retire at the end of July, 2012.
Justice Muktar’s elevation was not without some stumbling blocks as some interests appeared uncomfortable with her ascension to the CJN post. In fact, there was an effort to put her out of contention by offering her an international assignment on behalf of the country. She bluntly rejected the unsolicited offer, which was made by the outgoing CJN.
Mr. Jonathan has also nominated Justice Clara Ogunbiyi and Justice Musa Mohammed as justices of the Supreme Court.
DANA AIR COMPENSATES CRASH VICTIMS
Dana Airline today gave out a ridiculous amount of money to displaced families of last month’s plane crash in Lagos, Southwest Nigeria.
Each of the six families in the two-storey building where the plane crashed into got a paltry N200,000 while the two people in the boys quarters got N100,000 each.
The pastor, who lost a duplex and a warehouse got N500,000 bringing the total amount disbursed to N1.9 million.
The cheques were distributed to the internally displaced people, who were severely affected at the Lagos State Ipaja Camp.
General Manager, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, Dr Femi Oke-Osanyintolu said the cheques distributed to them were not compensation but money given to cushion the effect of their loss.
He said with the money, the displaced people would be able to rent houses to stay while waiting for the real compensation from Dana Airline. The displaced people were housed at the Ipaja Camp of the Lagos State Government.

PRESIDENT JONATHAN COMMISSIONS BULLET PROOF FACTORY
Nigeria’s President Goodluck Jonathan said in Kaduna on Monday that henceforth , the country would not import military equipment that could be produced locally.
Jonathan made the statement while inaugurating a ballistics vest factory complex for the production of military ancillary products at Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON).
The products include personal protection armour, such as tactical ballistic vests (bullet proof vest) and night vision goggle equipment.
BIMBO AKINSANYA DISCHARGED AND ACQUITTED
Popular Nollywood actress, Bimbo Akinsanya, was on Monday discharged and acquitted of conspiracy against a general overseer by an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.
The presiding magistrate, Mr Olufemi Isaac, discharged the 34-year-old actress based on the no-case submission advice brought in by the Lagos State Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
In accordance with the advice submitted by the DPP, the magistrate said that suspicion, no matter how serious, could not be a ground for submission.
SENATOR ALBASHIR USMAN DIES IN A CAR CRASH
REPAIRS ON THIRD MAINLAND BRIDGE SUSPENDED INDEFINITELY
The Lagos Sector Commander of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Charles Akpabio, said the postponement of the repairs is intended to put more measures in place to ease possible traffic congestion the closure of bridge will create.
Mr Akpabio urged all motorists in Lagos to go about their activities and wait for further information on the bridge repair.
