A fake Army Lieutenant is facing trial for allegedly snatching seven cars.
The
suspect, Lawrence Oguezi, who was allegedly caught impersonating
Lt.S.M. Sule, was arrested and charged before Ikeja Magistrate’s Court,
Lagos State, southwest Nigeria, with conspiracy and robbery.
The
seven cars the police recovered from him include a Lexus SUV belonging
to Lt. S.M. Sule, a Sienna belonging to a Civil Defence official, a
Toyota Camry Tiny Light, a Honda Accord, a Honda Civic and a Camry
2009 model he allegedly stole from a car stand.
It was alleged that he sold all the cars in Owerri, Imo State, southsouth Nigeria.
In a statement to police investigators, Oguezi confessed to have been
convicted and spent two years in Kirikiri Maximum Prison before he was
rearrested at a hotel in Ogudu GRA for impersonation and car snatching.
The
suspect, an indigene of Delta State,southsouth Nigeria, was allegedly
arrested following series of car snatching operations while posing as an
army lieutenant.
It was alleged that the suspect, during one of
his operations, snatched a car from Lt.S.M. Sule and in the stolen car;
he saw three pairs of army uniform which hewore to carry out his
operations with a forged army identity card.
It was alleged that
the suspect in the army uniform usually stand s by the roadside on the
highway and flag down motorists for a free ride to the eastern or
northern part of the country but would later hijack the car at gun
point.
It was also learnt that the suspect allegedly stole the Camry 2009 model car from a car dealer in Ikeja while in army uniform.
It
was alleged that the suspect while posing as an army lieutenant visited
the car stand, pretended that he wanted to buy the car, but drove off
when he was asked to test drive it.
The police, through a sting
operation, trailed the suspect to a hotel at Ogudu where he was
eventually arrested and arraigned on an eight-count charge of conspiracy
and robbery. His plea was not take and the magistrate, Mrs.Oshodi
remanded him in prison custody while the duplicate of his file case
would be forwarded to Director of Public Prosecution, DPP, for legal
advice. The case has been adjourned till 20 May, 2013.-pm news
