Bomb explosions rocked the 1st Mechanised Division of the Nigerian Army, Kaduna, Northwest Nigeria at about 11.15 a.m. today.
The bombs were suspected to have been planted by members of Boko Haram sect.
Residents of the Kaduna – Zaria road close to the barracks ran in all directions when they heard the blasts.
Less than two hours later (at about 12.50 p.m.), another bomb exploded at the same site even as military men tried to cordon off the area which is not only densely populated but also a market area.
The second explosion worsened the earlier pandemonium. Both traders and residents ran for their dear life.
A third explosion also occurred at Rigasa area of the city.
As at the time of filing this report, the number of casualties had not been ascertained.
The source of the explosion was also not yet known.
There was no official response because tension was still very much high.
Members of Boko Haram have not claimed responsibility for the explosions.
The ensuing confusion continued at press time.
Everybody including journalists were running away from the troubled spot.
Also, security forces last night stormed the hideout of Boko Haram terrorists in Mariri area of Kano, northwest Nigeria and made some arrests.
This followed the bombing of Sharada Police station where a policeman was wounded yesterday.
Five people were feared dead during the gun duel that lasted for about seven hours.
About 10 truck loaded with soldiers arrived the scene to engage the Boko Haram militants.
A large cache of arms and ammunition including AK47 rifles and explosives were recorded from the Boko Haram terrorists.
The Kano State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Idris this morning confirmed the raid to P.M.NEWS.
He declined to confirm the number of the sect members arrested.
Residents of Mariri were thrown into fear with consistent sounds of gunshots that lasted for several hours during a gun battle between the Boko Haram sect and security operatives.
The Commissioner of Police said no life was lost but, according to him, security forces were able to dislodge members of the sect and recovered assorted explosives.
As at the time of filing this report, all roads leading to Mariri were barricaded as soldiers and mobile policemen patrol the area.
According to a resident, Alhaji Abubakar Inuwa, “the gun shots started at about 6:30 p.m. We could not sleep for several hours. We thought another war had started. In fact, as I am talking to you most of my neighbours have started parking out of the area. I pray that the government will bring lasting solution to this Boko Haram problem before things get out of hand.”
CP Idris said the police and other security agencies are working hard to safeguard lives and properties of Nigerians resident in Kano, while urging citizens to continue to provide useful information to the police.
“Like I have always said, policing the state remains the business of all of us. This is why I have continued to emphasise on community policing. If all of us can sincerely discourage crime and criminal activities, the society would become a better place. As I thank those who come up with useful information, I want to urge everyone to move about his or her business without fear,” Idris said.-PM NEWS
