OBAMA HAILS GADDAFI'S DEMISE,WARS ARAB REGIMES

US President Barack Obama said Thursday the death of Muammer Gaddafi ended a long, painful chapter for Libyans and warned "iron fist" regimes in the rest of the Arab world they would inevitably fall.

 

Speaking in the White House Rose Garden, Obama said Kadhafi’s demise vindicated the collective military action of the West and said Libyans now had a chance to build a "democratic" and "tolerant nation."

"Just one year ago, the notion of a free Libya seemed impossible, but then the Libyan people rose up and demanded their rights.

CBN TRIES TO STABILISE THE NAIRA

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) yesterday announced that it was going to sell US dollars at auctions and directly to the market. At the same time, it announced a raise in the amount of dollars that banks can hold in their reserve. This is in an effort to stabilise the Naira.

BABA SUWE TO REMAIN IN NDLEA CUSTODY FOR 15 MORE DAYS

A Federal High Court in Lagos, on Friday, approved a request by the Nigerian Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to keep comedian, Babatunde Omodina, who is popularly known as Baba Suwe, in custody for 15 more days.

Justice Okechukwu Okeke made the order after entertaining arguments on an ex-parte application from the NDLEA lawyer, Theresa Asuquo.

The application was supported by a 29-paragraph affidavit deposed to by an NDLEA intelligence officer, Femi Osifuye and a CT scan result issued by a consultant radiologist with the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Dr. Subhash Vijayvargiya.

The result, according to the affidavit, confirmed that Baba Suwe has large amounts of narcotics in his body.

It would be recalled that the NDLEA arrested the comedian on October 12, while he was trying to board an Air France flight to Paris, because the scanning machine at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport indicated that he had ingested substances suspected to be hard drugs.

According to the affidavit, Osifuye averred that following Baba Suwe’s arrest, he was placed on observation pending when he would excrete the ingested substances, but  while on observation, Baba Suwe refused to eat, claiming that he eats only once in three days.

He added that as a result of Baba Suwe’s refusal to eat, he had not excreted the ingested substances.

According to Osifuye, after the comedian made the second excretion and no substance was found, the NDLEA had to take him to LASUTH for another CT scan for a second opinion on whether he indeed ingested the narcotic drugs, and the test confirmed large amount of drugs in his body.

Besides, the agency stressed, it would be in the interest of the suspect to excrete the ingested substances so as to prevent them from bursting in his abdomen, a situation the agency argued might lead to his death.

SAUDI CROWN PRINCE DIES

Saudi Crown Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz Al Saud has died, a State Department official told CNN on Friday.

There were no more immediate details about his death.

Crown Prince Sultan, thought to be in his 80s, was the minister of defense, and was one of the top figures in the Saudi kingdom. He's had various medical issues in recent years.

In 2009, he was in New York for surgery for an undisclosed illness. At the time, there was speculation that he had been suffering from a serious illness.

He has also flown to Morocco for more medical treatments.

LASU STUDENT PROTEST

To protest a hike in tuition by the school authorities, student union executives of the Lagos State University (LASU), on Thursday, disrupted the ongoing second semester examinations in the school, as they chased students out of examination halls to join a protest.

The LASU students obstructed traffic on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway by blocking the road with a seized BRT bus and an articulated truck.

According to a bulletin(INFO/PR/LASU/1192) issued by LASU’s Information and Public Relations Unit of the Vice Chancellor’s office on October 12, entitled “Proposed Increase In School Fees for the  2011/2012 Academic Session”, new students admitted into the Arts/Education  faculty will pay N193,750; Social and Management Faculty students will pay N223,750.

For Faculty of Law, the proposed fee is N248,750; Communications/Transport will pay N238,750;  Science , N258,750; Engineering, N298,750; while College of Medicine students will pay N348,750.

The increase is more than a 700 percent increase from the current tuition payable by students in the school.

GADHAFI CAPTURED

Conflicting reports surfaced Thursday that deposed Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi is dead or has been captured. Deafening celebrations erupted in Tripoli, but none of the reports could be independently verified.

Gadhafi was killed, AbdelHakim Bilhajj, head of the National Transitional Council's military arm in Tripoli announced live on Al-Jazeera Arabic Thursday. Gadhafi's death was also reported by National Transitional Council television station Al-Ahrar. It did not cite a source.

WHY NDLEA WON'T FREE BABA SUWE YET

Nollywood comic actor, Baba Suwe, will remain in detention until the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, is convinced he is innocent of drug allegations, the agency said this morning.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise, the Director General of NDLEA, Mr. Femi Ajayi, explained that though the comedian has tested negative to drug ingestion twice since he was arrested on Wednesday 12 October, he remains a suspect until he tests negative at least three times.
