GULDER ULTIMATE SEARCH RETURNS WITH SEASON 9

This year's ultimate search is themed ‘The Gate Keeper’s Fortune’, this year’s edition will take place in the serene community of Usaka, Akwa-Ibom State, organizers say.
The winner of this year’s event will walk home with the whooping sum of N9m, the highest prize money since the inception of the event, along with a brand new SUV worth N10m and N500,000 ‘swagger’ allowance.
This year’s edition will feature 12 participants selected from rigorous screening processes in four geographic zones across the federation. The cities where the screenings will hold are:  Makurdi, Owerri, Benin and Lagos.

TOGOLESE WOMEN DROPPED THEIR TROUSERS TO PROVOKE POLICE OFFICERS IN A PROTEST


Several Togolese women  who are protesting under the opposition name, “Sauvons Le Togo” (“Let’s Save Togo”), have on August 28 in Togo’s capital Lome, dropped their trousers in front of police forces to provoke them, to the great amusement of fellow protesters, bystanders and journalists.

The day before, the collective had called on its female members to join a week-long “sex strike”, designed to motivate more men to join them in their fight against President Faure Gnassingbé.
For the moment there is no way of knowing if this appeal to “close their legs”, as local journalists describe it, has been adhered to.

Bayo Ogunshola, a mortuary staff of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) has been docked at a Magistrate Court in Ikeja Lagos for assaulting a photo journalist, Benedict Uwalaka.
Mr. Uwalaka a photo journalist with Leadership newspaper was assaulted at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) on Thursday 9 August while covering the release of bodies of Dana airline crash victims.-SAHARA

WORLD'S SHORTEST MAN AND WOMAN COME TOGETHER FOR THE FIRST TIME TO LAUNCH BOOK Launch Book



Chandra Bahadur Dangi, the world’s shortest man and Jyoti Amge, the world’s shortest woman met for the first time to celebrate the organisation which made them famous.
The 18-year-old from India and the 72-year-old Nepalese both made headlines last winter when they were given their titles by the Guinness World Records....
Chandra  and Jyoti may be generations apart but were joking and laughing as they posed for photos with the new book, both dressed in traditional outfits from their native countries.
The photoshoot for the release of the book gave them another record to add to their list – it is the first time the world’s smallest man and woman have met in recorded history
The official authority on record-breaking achievements is set to release its 57th edition of the world’s best-selling copyright book, Guinness World Records 2013.
The book has sold 120 million copies to date and Guinness World Records receives more than 1,000 applications each week and has a specialized team of multi-language record managers and adjudicators who travel the globe to verify official record attempts.

PRESIDENT JONATHAN COMMISSIONS OJUKWU GATEWAY

President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday commissioned the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu Gateway in Onitsha as part of his one-day official visit to Anambra.
At the occasion, Jonathan said the gateway stands as a symbol of unity in the South East and prayed that the cause for which the late warlord was known for would not die.
He said the strategic site of the statue would always bring to mind the memories of the warlord and urged the people not to allow his dream to die.

FIRE RAZES LUTH HIV CLINIC

The Human Immuno Virus (HIV) Clinic of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), popularly known as API N Clinic was yesterday razed by fire.
The cause of the fire, which started around 7.20p.m, could not be ascertained as at press time, but sources said it would not be unconnected to the materials, which the clinic was built with.
The clinic which was made of wood was one of the oldest structure erected at the teaching hospital and had been there for decades.
Fire fighters from the Nigerian Fire Service were on hand to put off the inferno and stop the fire from spreading to the newly constructed clinics around it, especially Paediatrics
Clinic and Haemodialysis Clinic that were close to the clinic. No single item was retrieved from the clinic Fortunately, the clinic was an out-patient clinic, therefore there was no patient on admission.  When contacted, the Chief Medical Director (CMD),
LUTH, Professor Akin Oshibogu confirmed the fire incident,  but made no further statement.

Yakubu Adesokan has won the first gold medal for Nigeria in the on-going Paralympic Games in London.

COURT DISMISSES SUIT AGAINST WADA

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, Wednesday dismissed a suit filed by Jibrin Isah Echocho asking the trial court to declare the swearing-in of Idris Wada as the governor of Kogi State invalid.
The winner of the January 2011 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) primaries, Jibrin Isah Echocho and a governorship aspirant, Oyebode Makinde, had concurrently instituted suits against Wada.
A three-member panel of the Court of Appeal, Abuja, presided over by Justice Zainab Bukalchuwa had remitted the case back to the trial court which dismissed the suit for being an abuse of court process and awarded the cost of N100, 000 against the plaintiff.

TINUBU NAMED LAUTECH CHANCELLOR

The governments of Oyo and Osun States have appointed former Lagos State governor and national leader of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as Chancellor of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomosho.
This was contained in a statement issued in Ibadan on Tuesday by Dr. Festus Adedayo, the Special Adviser to Governor Abiola Ajimobi on Media.
LAUTECH, a university jointly owned by the two states, was established by the old Oyo State in 1988.
According to the statement, the choice of Tinubu, a financial expert, accountant and administrator, and now author, was arrived at after extensive deliberations between the governments of the two owner-states.
The former Lagos State Governor is expected to bring his administrative experience in public management to bear on the running of the institution and reposition it to meet the standard of its peers all over the world.

FIVE DIE AFTER EATING AMALA

Bolorunduro village in Ondo State was thrown into mourning last Wednesday when a family of five died after eating amala (yam flour). The names of the deceased were given as Michael Onoja,56; his wife, Comfort 42, Monday, 24; Patience, 21; and the eight-year-old grandchild, Joy Odoh.
A police source said that when Onoja returned from his farm on the fateful day, he instructed his daughter, Patience, to prepare amala for the family to eat.

Cancer patient Debbie Idiagbonya Osarere, has reason to smile as pop star David ‘Davido’ Adeleke has donated the sum of N1M.
Debbie who has been diagnosed with a non-malignant lump in her breast is currently hospitalized at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH). Davido a few hours ago paid her a visit.
The 28-year old, who had two surgeries in 2011, needs N6m for a final operation.
Friends say Debbie needs a double mastectomy, where both breasts will be removed completely, another surgery for arrangement of spinal cord and a breast reconstruction surgery

KIDNAPPED ESUT VC RELEASED

The Vice Chancellor of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology, Prof. Cyprian Onyeji, who was kidnapped on August 15, 2012, has been released.
Onyeji was released at about 11:30pm in Anambra State.
He was left by his kidnappers at Igbariam area of area of Anambra State.
He was reported hale and hearty when he was released and has since been reunited with his family.
The police in Enugu State confirmed his release but did not give details.
Onyeji was abducted from the ESUT gate as he was going to his office by gunmen who later called his family to demand for a ransom of N200 million.
It could not be confirmed if any ransom was paid before he was released.

At 6pm on August 20th, a JTF operation, Restore Order patrol intercepted a heavily bomb-laden car at the Tudan Quarters, Madgumeri area of Maiduguri. The JTF says that they received the information from an  arrested Boko Haram member and a mole within a Boko Haram camp. The JTF recovered 4 cylinders, 4 DAF gas oil cylinders, 3 constructed IEDs, 18 x 9 volts batteries with 2 switches, and 4 x 25 litres Jerricans with incendiary materials.-sahara

NIGERIAN PHONE SELLER ARRESTED WITH N27M HARD DRUG

Officers of Nigeria’s National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, have apprehended a 26-year old man in connection with 8.5kg of methamphetamine concealed inside metal pipes, the agency said on Tuesday.
The suspect, Afunaya Thaddeus Izunna, who sells phone accessories at Ikeja, Lagos, southwest Nigeria, was found at the weekend to be in possession of the drug during the screening of passengers on Ethiopian airline flight to New Delhi, India.

NIGERIAN STUDENT, OLAOLU SUNKANMI FEMI FACING LIFE IMPRISONMENT IN UKRAINE FOR ATTEMPTED MURDER


It was gathered that the Nigerian identified as Olaolu Sunkanmi Femi and one of his friends were physically attacked in front of his apartment by four Ukrainian young men and two women who pulled them to the ground while hurling racist slurs on them.

According to eye witness account, Sunkanmi was said to have managed to get up and defended himself against the assailants with a glass from a broken bottle.


"It was while he was defending himself that police arrived at the scene and the Nigerian was subsequently arrested and charged with attempted murder of five people" a Nigerian embassy staff who has knowledge of the case told African Outlook, adding that the victim thus became an accused in a case which has become a celebrated case in Ukraine.
