THOUSANDS SIGN PETITION AGAINST ANTI-GAY MARRIAGE BILL

A petition, which has amassed thousands of signatures, calls on President Goodluck Jonathan not to sign into law, the Anti-Same Sex Marriage Bill recently passed by the Senate.
The bill which proposes a 14-year jail term for homosexuals, has been condemned by several international organisations, rights groups and western governments on the ground that it would discriminate against homosexuals.

So far, the petition has amassed 60,000 signatures from around the world.
Representatives from the Nigerian LGBTQI in Diaspora, and other groups also rallied outside the Nigerian Mission to the United Nations in protest of the country's new law.
Nigeria is not the only African country that has taken such a tough stance against homosexuality. Uganda, Ghana and Zimbabwe have also done same.
However, religious and cultural sentiments played a large part in the decision of the Senate. Senate President David Mark, in the past, said as a Christian he cannot support homosexuality.
Mark has also repeatedly said there will be no going back on the anti-gay marriage issue, regardless of pressures from the west and threats of withdrawal of foreign aid.
The petition is being signed at www.allout.org/nigeria
