AIRTEL DENIES SACKING 3000 EMPLOYEES

Airtel Nigeria has denied allegations of having sacked 3000 call centre agents and also stated that it did not have any intention of cutting staff salaries.

A statement by Tech Mahindra and Spanco (a global Business Process Outsourcing company and providers of Call Centre services to Airtel Nigeria), also described the reports as false. “Our attention has been drawn to several messages circulating in cyberspace alleging that our client, Airtel, had fired 3,000 Call Centre agents due to a disagreement over a purported plan to reduce salaries. This is untrue and we want to use this medium to put the facts right,” the statement said.

Emeka Oparah, the company’s Corporate Communications Manager, said: “We did not sack anybody, not even one person; in fact we do not have up to three thousand employees. The agents who were reportedly dismissed are not Airtel’s staff. What has happened is, some of the call centre agents that work for our partners (Tech Mahindra and Spanco) have contracts that expired on Friday 30 September, and our partners decided not to renew their contracts,” he said.

He, however, added that the company’s partners were recruiting new staff and would reappoint some of the old workers.DAILYTIMES
